Why Can't I Find My Party on Smart Search?
Follow these troubleshooting steps if you can't find your party on Smart Search.
Use the Party:"Party-Name" Boolean Operator
On Smart Search, start with using the Boolean operator party:”party-name” when you want search result items that have a specific party or attorney listed as a party or attorney of record.
🔎 Keep in mind that every state and county lists party information differently on their Dockets (e.g., “first-name last-name,” “last-name, first-name”). If you’re unable to find your party, it may be due to variations in the way courts list party names. Please check how your jurisdiction/court lists this information – you may conduct an easy spot check using Smart Search – then play with different name variations as seen in the examples below.
Search Variations of the Party Name in Quotation Marks
To search other parties or counsel who may be deeply involved in the case but not listed as having “appeared” in the case by the underlying court, do not use (party:) search. Instead, simply search variations of the party or company’s name in quotation marks:
🔎 Again, keep in mind that every state and county lists party information differently on their Dockets (e.g., “first-name last-name,” “last-name, first-name”). If you’re unable to find your party, it may be due to variations in the way courts list party names. Please check how your jurisdiction/court lists this information.
